Saint Joseph's Soars Past Bucknell, 1-0

Sept. 25, 2012

Box Score

Lewisburg, Pa. - Freshman midfielder Tim Lazorko scored his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to lift Saint Joseph's over Bucknell on Tuesday evening. Senior goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi made two saves to record his second shutout of the season. With the win, the Hawks snapped Bucknell's five-game winning streak and handed the Bison their first loss at home this season.

After 81 minutes of scoreless play, the Hawks saw an offensive opportunity as junior defender Brendan Reilly gained possession of the ball on a free kick. Reilly found sophomore midfielder Jake Nelson, who headed a brilliant pass over to Lazorko, just outside the 16. Lazorko rocketed a shot past Bucknell's Mike Lansing to give the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.

"I was so proud of the effort and commitment to win tonight from our team," beamed head coach Don D'Ambra. "They defended with conviction and battled for 90 minutes, which was very impressive. Nelson was a good presence on the field tonight. He won a lot of 50/50 balls and made good decisions."

Bucknell would attempt its final shot, and its 23rd of the game, in the 82nd minute but would be rejected by an intensified Hawk defense.

For the game, the Bison outshot the Hawks 23-12 and held the advantage in corner kicks 8-4, but Saint Joseph's would come out on top with the 3-2 advantage in shots on goal, including Lazorko's game-winner.

"On the winning goal, Nelson headed a through ball to Lazorko, who made a tremendous run behind Bucknell's back line and finished it off with a great shot to the far post," said D'Ambra. "Timmy [Lazorko] also hit the cross bar a few minutes prior to his goal, so he was attacking with a purpose."

The Hawks will travel to Baltimore, Md., to face Loyola on Saturday, September 29. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
