Holding Saint Louis to just 25 percent from the floor (14-of-56), the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed the Billikens, 69-38, Sunday afternoon at Chaefitz Arena. The Hawks, who improved to 12-5 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play, finished with three players in double figures, led by redshirt senior forward Chatilla van Grinsven's 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite giving up the first basket of the game, the Hawks quickly took control of the game. Behind a 14-2 run, Saint Joseph's opened a 10-point lead as a Vila three-pointer upped her team's lead to 14-4 at 11:09. The Hawks defense stymied the Billikens to just 2-of-12 shooting to start the game and caused five turnovers.
Leading 30-16, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to open their biggest lead of the half, 22 points. Started by three pointers by Vila and Gotfrida, SJU took a 38-16 advantage on a pair of free throws by van Grinsven with 1:07 left in the half.
Saint Joseph's carried over momentum into the second half, allowing Saint Louis to get no closer than the halftime score as the Hawks held the Billikens to just 5-of-26 shooting in the period and outscored them 31-18.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 46.6 percent from the field (27-of-58), including 6-of-16 from three-point range (37.5 percent) and 9-of-11 from the foul line (81.8 percent). Saint Louis, which fell to 7-11 overall and 1-2 in the A-10 with the loss, hit just 3-of-14 from three-point range (21.4 percent) and 7-of-10 from the foul line, while turning the ball over 15 times.
Joining van Grinsven in double figures was junior guard Erin Shields and redshirt sophomore Natasha Cloud. Shields finished with 13 points and a game-high eight assists, while Cloud scored 12 points and handed out seven assists.
Saint Louis was paced by Lorreal Jones' nine points.
The Hawks return to action Saturday when they host St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m.
