Box Score MERION STATION, Pa. – Juniors Jordan Martin and Tori Popinko tallied second-half goals on Sunday but the Saint Joseph's field hockey team ultimately fell to Cornell, 4-2, at Ellen Ryan Field.
Cornell (6-5) jumped out to an early lead as Elly Plappert converted a penalty stroke with 31:01 to play in the half. She then scored her second of the game seven minutes later when she picked up a loose ball off the right post and put it into the cage past SJU keeper Amelia Deibler.
Katy Weeks extended the lead to three with 14:14 to go in the half after she picked up a rebound and scored to give Cornell a 3-0 lead at halftime. The Big Red then extended the lead to 4-0 three minutes into the second half on a goal by Hannah Balleza.
Saint Joseph's (4-9) answered right away as Martin notched her sixth goal of the season after tucking a loose ball into the cage from the right post.
Popinko brought the Hawks back within two with 5:34 to go on a pass from Sarah Yerk, but that would close out the scoring for the game.
Deibler made five saves on the day for Saint Joseph's, while Carolyn Horner made three for Cornell.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday, October 18, when they host Lock Haven at 3:30 p.m.
