Dan Goettner was named interim head coach for the Saint Joseph's men's rowing program on December 23, 2010. He was in the midst of his eighth season on the SJU staff when he was appointed as head coach, after serving the past six years as the Hawks' freshman coach.
"I've been invoved with the team as a rower for four years and later as an assistant for eight years. So I was excited to get the opportunity to take the reins and run with the team," said Goettner upon his appointment. "I plan on taking the bits and pieces of all my experiences, see what works at a number of different places and put them together and make it work at Saint Joseph's."
Goettner joined the Hawks' staff at the start of the 2003-04 season and helped the Freshman Lightweight 8 earn a gold medal in the 2004 Dad Vail Regatta. He took over the freshman team the following season and saw the Hawks successfully defend the Dad Vail title in the Freshman Lightweight 8 for two more years, in 2005 and 2006. Goettner also led the Hawks to first place in the Freshman 8 at the 2006 Dad Vail Regatta. More recently, SJU won the Freshman 8 and took the silver medal in the Freshman Lightweight 8 at the 2010 Dad Vail.
A 2001 graduate of Saint Joseph's, Goettner rowed for the Hawks' Varsity 8 all four years. He was a member of the 1999 crew that earned the silver medal in the Dad Vail Regatta and participated in the Henley Royal Regatta in England. As a senior, he served as co-captain and was named the team's Scholar-Athlete.
A native of Ambler, Pa., Goettner was a four-year member of the La Salle College High School crew and rowed for the Varsity 8 as a junior and senior.
He currently resides in the East Falls section of Philadelphia with his wife Jill, who is a 2001 SJU graduate, and their daughter Olivia.
