Women's Basketball Falls To Saint Louis, 69-65

PHILADELPHIA - Shooting just 32.2 percent from the field, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team had its four-game win streak snapped by Saint Louis, 69-65, Wednesday evening at Hagan Arena.

Up 29-22 at the half, the Hawks (16-5, 5-3 Atlantic 10) saw its lead slip away midway through the second half as a jumper by SLU's Erin Nelson put her team ahead 42-40 at 10:47.

Saint Joseph's rallied to take a 54-44 lead, but the Billikens hit timely shots to open a 60-53 edge with 2:33 to play.

Down by six with under a minute to play, the Hawks cut the deficit to 65-62 on a three-pointer by Erin Shields with 21 seconds to play.

On the ensuing inbounds, Saint Joseph's appeared to cause a five-second violation as the Billikens couldn't inbound the play. However, after the referees met, Saint Louis was awarded a time out as one referee called a timeout, while the other called a violation.

The Billikens' Jamesia Price would get fouled and hit two free throws to give her team a 67-62 edge with 16 seconds to play.

Shields again would answer, hitting her fourth three-pointer to bring the Hawks within 67-65.

However, Saint Louis' Price would hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds to go to seal the win for her team.

In the first half, SJU opened a 10-point edge on the Billikens behind a 10-2 run as it went from a 16-14 lead to a 26-16 advantage on a pair of free throws by Natasha Cloud

Saint Louis (7-13, 2-5 A-10) would close the half with a 6-3 run as Saint Joseph's took a 29-22 lead into halftime.

For the game, Saint Joseph's hit 19-of-59 from the floor, and just 11-of-36 in the second half (30.6 percent) as it lost just its second home game of the year. The Hawks finished 7-of-15 from behind the arc (46.7 percent) and hit 20-of-25 from the foul line.

Individually, Cloud and sophomore Sarah Fairbanks both posted double-doubles as both finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Cloud also led all players with six assists, while Shields was added 15 points and senior Ilze Gotfrida added 10 points.

At the other end, Saint Louis shot 38.1 percent overall (24-of-63), but hit 15-of-30 from the field in the second half. The Billikens, which outscored SJU 32-18 in the paint, hit just 4-of-16 from three-point range and 17-of-28 from the foul line (60.7 percent).
