Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Saint Joseph's senior forward Mike Glazer scored (23') and freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards made a match-saving stop in the 92nd minute as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad battled to a 1-1 draw with George Washington in Atlantic 10 action at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex GW Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. With the draw, the Hawks stand at 6-3-4 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
Saint Joseph's scoring play unfolded in the 23rd minute as sophomore midfielder Bliss Harris launched a sharp cross across the box toward Glazer. Glazer slid in to the lower-left and tapped the ball past George Washington's James van der Merwe for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Immediately following Glazer's goal, George Washington (5-6-1, 1-1-1 A-10) put Edwards under pressure as Garrett Heine fired off back-to-back shots at the 22:58 and 23:11 marks, but Edwards calmly made the pair of saves to keep the Colonials off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half.
Trailing 1-0 coming out of the halftime break, George Washington struck back just six minutes into the second half as Oliver Curry found room around an SJU defender and passed the ball of to Christian Lawal. From the left side of the box, Lawal found room in the lower-right corner of SJU's net to equalize the score, 1-1.
Edwards (4-2-4) made three saves on the afternoon, the first two of which came just 13 seconds apart from one another early in the first half. Edwards' final save came in the form of a phenomenal diving stop to his left in the 92nd minute that undoubtedly saved the match for the Crimson and Gray.
For the match, George Washington owned a 15-8 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 edge in the overtime frames. The Colonials earned six of the match's nine corner kicks, including four in the first half.
Glazer and sophomore midfielder Sam Irvin led the Hawks with two shots apiece. Irvin fired off SJU's final shot on goal in the 105th minute, but van der Merwe made the save.
Saint Joseph's returns home this Friday, October 24 against La Salle. The Atlantic 10 matchup is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
