Men's Soccer Falls to La Salle, 1-0

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Joe Farrell's goal in the 26th minute held up for the Explorers as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad fell to La Salle, 1-0, in Atlantic 10 action on Friday evening on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks stand at 6-4-4 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.

The scoring play unfolded as La Salle's Matt Robinson dished a pass toward the middle of the box to a running Farrell, who gained a bit of room on his defender and fired his shot into the left side of the net for the eventual match-winner.

For the game, La Salle (5-7-2, 1-2-1 A-10) held a slight 13-12 edge in shots, while both teams took nine apiece in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Sam Irvin took a match-high four shots, while junior defender Tim Lazorko, who made the move from defense to midfield for the entire second half, landed both of his shots on goal.

Saint Joseph's saw some positive offensive opportunities, as sophomore forward Mori Diane took off on a promising-looking run late in the first half and sophomore midfielder Bliss Harris launched a phenomenal pass up to Lazorko that was just out of the junior's reach with less than five minutes to play.

SJU's defensive unit proved very strong in the final 15 minutes, beginning with senior Brandon Stevis' team save, thwarting the efforts of La Salle's Conor Nichols, in the 77th minute.

Following the early La Salle goal, Saint Joseph's freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (4-3-4) played a strong closing 64:50 and made five saves in a full-match effort in just the first home loss of his career.

La Salle owned six of the match's nine cornerkicks. In an extremely physical matchup that saw 35 fouls, Saint Joseph's got whistled 21 times.

The Hawks return to Atlantic 10 action this Sunday, October 26 against Rhode Island. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field. In conjunction with the SJU Alumni Association, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer program will hold its annual Alumni and Family Day, complete with the annual Alumni Game and free children's clinic beginning at 10:30 a.m. For more information and/or to register for the event, please visit http://alumni.sju.edu/msoc.
