Saint Joseph's mourns the loss of Athletics Hall of Fame member and broadcasting legend Bill Campbell, who passed away on October 6 at the age of 91.
Campbell, known as "The Dean", is widely considered the greatest voice in Philadelphia sports broadcasting.
Campbell attended Saint Joseph's until he left to serve with the Coast Guard in World War II and upon his return, embarked on his legendary career. A longtime resident of Haddonfield, N.J., he was inducted into the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
He described the action of Philadephia's teams and sporting events for over eight decades on the air in both radio and television. Campbell called the action of Big 5 basketball games from the very beginning and was a broadcaster for Philadelphia's professional teams - the Warriors, 76ers, Eagles and Phillies. And even recently, he was still heard on KYW Radio.
The viewing will be on Sunday, October 12, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Blake-Doyle Funeral Home in Collingswood, N.J. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 13 at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Haddonfield, N.J.
