Men's Soccer Ends Season with 4-0 Loss to Dayton

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers scored one goal in the first half and three in the second as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to Dayton, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon on Sweeney Field. The Hawks conclude the 2014 season 7-7-4 and 2-5-1 in the Atlantic 10 to finish .500 overall for the first time since 2001.

Prior to the start of today's match, Saint Joseph's honored its five seniors – Tommy Brooks, Mike Glazer, Jake Mulinge, Jake Nelson, and Brandon Stevis – for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past four seasons. This year, these seniors led SJU to its first seven-win season since 2003, and as a group, combined for 19 wins over their careers, the best four-year total since 2005. This group also led the Hawks to a non-conference record of 5-2-3 to boast the program's best non-conference winning percentage (.650) since 2001.

"I'm proud of our seniors for the four years that they've had," said head coach Don D'Ambra following the match. "All of them had phenomenal careers. They've been great leaders. I just want to congratulate them."

Dayton (7-6-5, 3-3-2 A-10) first scored in the 14th minute as Ryan Peterson connected on a header on a corner-kick assist from Rafael Gamboa.

The Flyers would add two more tallies in the 64th and 66th minute. After forcing an SJU turnover, James Haupt found himself in a one-on-one situation with SJU sophomore goalkeeper Jay Higbee and put his shot into the right side of the net. Two minutes later, Maik Schoonderwoerd received a cross into the box from Amass Amankona and tucked it into the left side of the net.

Dayton's Kissima Bojang added the Flyers' fourth goal on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 86th minute.

"Tough game," said D'Ambra of the match. "With Senior Day, we came out and played with good urgency. Dayton, who was fighting for a playoff spot, needed to get this result, and they came out with a lot on intensity and a lot of urgency. They ended up getting a free kick goal, a set piece goal, and we started chasing the game in the second half. We let up another goal. There was a discrepensy on whether or not it was offsides and at that point, down 2-0, a lot of our guys were very deflated while Dayton had a lot of energy. We just couldn't close it out. Dissappointing day."

Freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (5-6-4, 2-5-1) suffered the loss, allowing one goal but making two saves in the first 45:00. Higbee played the final 45:00, allowing three goals and making three saves in the second half.

For the match, Dayton owned a 19-9 edge in shots, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal and a 12-3 overall shots advantage in the second half, and earned six of the match's nine corner kicks.

In their final matches donning the Crimson and Gray, Glazer took a team-high three shots while Nelson took one; both landed SJU's only shots on goal. Nelson, Stevis, and Brooks played complete matches on the back line while Glazer saw 59 minutes. Mulinge missed the match due to injury.

"Our young guys just have to learn from this year, but it was a good, successful year," added D'Ambra of the season.

Saint Joseph's will look to return 22 Hawks and seven starters in 2015.

MATCH NOTES: Sophomore midfielder Max Pozzessere made his collegiate debut in the 37th minute and saw eight minutes of action.
