MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday afternoon as Dayton came away with a 6-1 win in the series opener between the teams at Smithson Field.
Saint Joseph's (19-10 overall, 8-4 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the bottom of the third as a one-out single from Chris Hueth scored Taylor Boyd with the game's first run.
Dayton (17-17 overall, 9-4 Atlantic 10) went ahead in the fifth on a double by Robby Sunderman and a groundout by Alex Harris.
The Flyers added four more in the sixth, sending 10 hitters to the plate and benefitting from five consecutive two-out singles, a hit batsman, and a walk.
The Hawks had an opportunity for a comeback, loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Nick Weybright came on and retired the final two batters of the game to notch his third save of the season.
Joe Wahl recorded his first win of the year for UD, allowing one run on three hits and five walks while fanning two. Jack Stover took the loss for SJU, as he was charged with five runs on six hits in an inning and two-thirds. Matt Morella made his first career start for Saint Joseph's, allowing a run on two hits in four-plus innings.
The teams will continue the series on Friday afternoon. First pitch from Smithson Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
