Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw With Rider

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Junior midfielder Tim Lazorko scored in the 58th minute and freshman goalkeeper Bobby Edwards made three saves in his collegiate debut as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Rider on Friday evening at Sweeney Field. With the tie, the Hawks now stand at 1-1-1.

"Once our guys settled in, it was a very competitive match," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "The second half and into overtime, I thought our guys were playing with good momentum. Offensively, we created a lot more opportunities, which is what we've been working on all week. Letting up the goal late in the game, they were able to battle back."

Held at a scoreless draw coming out of the halftime break, the Hawks struck the scoreboard first. Lazorko gained possession of a through ball from senior forward Mike Glazer and fired his shot toward net. Rider goalkeeper David Pastuna got a hand on the shot, but the ball found the back of the net as Lazorko tallied his first goal of the season and team-leading 10th goal of his career.

The Hawks continued to put pressure on the Broncs, taking six shots over the next 19 minutes of play, but Rider's Justin Veltri scored just 38 seconds after checking back into the match to equalize the score, 1-1.

Neither team would be able to capitalize on the final 13:21 as the game was sent into overtime. Glazer took the match's lone shot on goal in the 91st minute of play, but Pastuna made the save to preserve the draw for the Broncs.

For the game, Rider owned a 19-15 edge in shots but a dominating 12-4 advantage in corner kicks, although the Hawks defensive unit shut down all 12 attempts. Rider was whistled for 20 of the match's 37 fouls.

The Broncs owned most of the offensive possession in the first half as the opening 45:00 saw Rider own an 11-2 advantage in shots and 7-2 edge in corner kicks. However, Edwards made all three of his first collegiate saves in the 7th, 21st, and 38th minutes to keep the Hawks scoreless heading into the second half. Edwards put forth a phenomenal performance in shutting down the offensive efforts of Rider's Jose Aquinaga; Aquinaga made multiple runs toward goal in the first half, but Edwards came off of his line to intercept the attempts on goal.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday, September 7 at LIU Brooklyn. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at LIU Field.
