Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – A second-minute goal provided the only scoring as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell to first-place Richmond, 1-0, at Crenshaw Field on Sunday afternoon.
Kelly Quinn gave Richmond (7-6 overall, 4-0 Atlantic 10) an early lead just 97 seconds into the game, deflecting a ball from Megan Miller into the cage for her sixth goal of the season.
Saint Joseph's (5-7 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) had a prime opportunity to equalize on a penalty corner late in the first half, but a shot off the stick of freshman Monica Tice was stopped by UR's Emily Braunewell to keep the Spiders in front.
Neither team was able to get any offense going in the second half, combining for just one shot and two penalty corners. The Hawks had an opportunity late as Richmond's Avery Safford was assessed a green card with 2:42 to go, but the Spider defense held on for the win.
Junior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler made two saves on the afternoon, while Braunewell made one.
The Hawks return to action on Friday for a key conference and local matchup at La Salle. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
