Baseball Drops Florida Finale to Seton Hall

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Seton Hall, 16-9, on Wednesday afternoon in the Hawks' final game of a six-day trip to the Sunshine State.  Matt Maul went 3-for-4 on the day, while John Brue hit his fourth home run of the season for SJU.

Seton Hall (3-8) opened an early lead, scoring one in the first and three in the second to go on top by a 4-0 score.

Saint Joseph's (2-9) roared back, scoring in three straight innings to take the lead.  In the bottom of the third, Peter Sitaras drew a walk, advanced to second on a single by Stefan Kancylarz, and scored on a single by Maul to get the Hawks on the board.

SJU got level with a three-spot in the fourth.  Charlie Coghlin lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Cal Jadacki, one of Coghlin's three RBI in the game, before Deon Stafford's two-run triple plated Sitaras and Brian Lau to knot the game.

Maul and Brue led off the fifth with back-to-back singles, and an error on the throw left runners on second and third for Jadacki, who singled home Maul to give SJU its first lead of the day.  Three batters later, Coghlin ripped a one-out single to score Jadacki and Brue and extend the Hawk lead to 7-4.

The Pirates answered with six runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.  SHU used four hits, three walks, two hit batsmen, and an RBI groundout to get back in front.  Seton Hall then added four more in the seventh and two in the ninth to up the lead to 16-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, Maul led off with a walk and Brue went deep for the second consecutive day to close out the scoring.

Ryan Testani earned the win for the Pirates, tossing a scoreless inning of relief, to move to 1-0.  Ryan Kelly took the loss, falling to 0-1.

The Hawks will play their home opener on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against Wagner.  Saint Joseph's will play eight of its next nine games at Smithson Field.
