Women's Lacrosse Hosts Villanova in Mid-Week Tilt on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA – Coming off of their first road victory of the season with a 14-11 win at Monmouth on Saturday, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team (4-2) will host Villanova (2-4) this Wednesday, March 18. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.

Nationally, the Hawks rank 11th in caused turnovers per game (10.33) and 12th in draw controls per game (14.33), led in the latter category by junior midfielder Kelly Phelan's 4.33, which ranks her 19th in the nation.

Saint Joseph's senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever ranks 10th in saves per game (9.83) and 21st in total saves (59), while Villanova's Jaclyn Fraum ranks 13th in save percentage (.506).

LEADING HAWKS
Heading into Wednesday's game, junior midfielder Kelly Phelan and sophomore midfielder Sarah Smith have scored 15 goals apiece. Phelan also leads the squad in assists (7), points (22), and draw controls (26) while Smith has scooped up nine ground balls and caused a team-high 10 turnovers. Sophomore attack Nora McCallion (9G, 5A) and sophomore defender Maggie Egan (7G, 3A) have added 10+ point efforts.

On the defensive end of the field, juniors Courtney Emanuele (10GB, 9CT) and Mallory Grey (9GB, 9CT) have anchored the back line while senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever (4-2) owns a 10.39 goals against average and .468 save percentage in all 387:05 to go with a team-best 14 ground balls. 

SCOUTING VILLANOVA
Villanova dropped its first two contests at Rutgers, 10-7, and Navy, 13-7, before downing Bucknell, 11-9, for its first win of the season on February 28. The Wildcats then fell at then-#19 Stony Brook, 13-6, before picking up their second win of the season over Delaware, 11-9, on March 11. Villanova is coming off of a 9-5 loss at Drexel this past Saturday. Both of Villanova's wins have been by a final of 11-9. Jackie Froccaro (14G, 2A) and Jessica Mucci (6G, 10A) lead the Wildcats with 16 points apiece while Jaclyn Fraum has seen all but 97:56 in net, posting a 10.20 goals against average and .506 save percentage in 247:04.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST THE WILDCATS
Saint Joseph's owns a 10-7 series edge over Villanova as Wednesday's contest will mark the 18th time in program history that the Hawks and Wildcats will meet. None of SJU's current Hawks have faced the Wildcats as the last time the two teams met was on March 19, 2009; Saint Joseph's came out with the 18-4 win. The Crimson and Gray have won the last seven meetings.

Paced by sophomore midfielder Sarah Smith's career-high seven-point effort, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team downed Monmouth, 14-11, at Kessler Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Smith factored into seven of SJU's 14 goals on the day while junior midfielder Kelly Phelan added one score and a game-high four assists and sophomore attack Nora McCallion added a hat trick.

SOARING WITH SMITH
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Smith factored into 50% of SJU's goals in the Hawks' 14-11 win over Monmouth on Saturday. Smith registered a career-high seven points on a career-high five goals and career-high two assists to lead Saint Joseph's to its first road win of the season and fourth overall victory.

COACH'S CORNER
Saint Joseph's head coach Alex Kahoe spoke to Matt Harmon, for ESPN3, following SJU's 14-11 win at Monmouth on Saturday, saying: "We're looking to take the team to the next level, and I'm really proud of the team and how hard they're working. They're really stepping up to compete for each game that we have."

NO FAILIN' WITH PHELAN
In both of SJU's two overtime victories, junior midfielder Kelly Phelan converted on the game-winning goal. Phelan scored an unassisted goal in the third overtime against American on February 18 and then went on to score the double-overtime GWG on a FPS against Wagner on March 2.

STARTING TEN
Saint Joseph's has seen 10 Hawks start all six games at this point in the early season. The sophomore, freshman attacking duo of Nora McCallion and Rena Carabases alongside junior midfielder Kelly Phelan and sophomore midfielders Katelyn Ambrose and Sarah Smith have sparked offensive unit while SJU's junior trio of Courtney Emanuele, Mallory Grey, and Caroline Hagan alongside sophomore Maggie Egan have anchored the back line. Senior goalkeeper Nora McGeeverhas played every minute in the cage, totaling 327:05, with the inclusion of three overtime games so far.
