Box Score

PHILADELPHIA  – Ten different Hawks registered goals as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 13-5 win over Stetson on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks improve to 5-3 overall while the Hatters fall to 2-7.

"In the second half, our team came together and stepped up more so offensively," said head coach Alex Kahoe of SJU's 9-3 second half. "Overall, we had a full, team effort, which will set the tone as we head into A-10s."

The Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a pair of back-to-back goals (25:59, 25:19) from freshman defender Aly Gormley.

Stetson responded with a pair of consecutive goals of its own (22:13, 11:20) to even out the score, 2-2, heading into the final 11:20 of the first half.

From that point, the Hawks tore off on an 8-0 run that spanned the next 24:24 to take a commanding 10-2 lead into the final 13:11 of regulation.

Sophomore midfielder Sarah Smith (7:08) and freshman attack Rena Carabases (2:15) closed out the first half with a pair of scores to put SJU up, 4-2, at the halftime break before the Hawks tore off for six consecutive goals in the second half from Smith (26:26), freshman midfielder Dana Garbinski (23:50), Carabases (17:42), sophomore defender Maggie Egan (16:17), sophomore midfielder Taylor Dachowski (13:38), and junior defender Mallory Grey (13:11).

The Hatters chipped away with a pair of goals from Hallie Merz and an unassisted score from Maddie Holvey to bring Stetson to within five, 10-5, with 5:36 to play.

However, sparked by junior attack Bonnie McShane's three-point effort, the Hawks tacked on three more scores in the final 2:12 as McShane scored on a dish from junior defender Courtney Emanuele and then assisted on freshman defender Catie Vivian's first collegiate goal with 53 seconds remaining and on sophomore attack Nora McCallion's score with 25 ticks left on the scoreboard.

For the game, Saint Joseph's owned a 29-18 advantage in shots, including an 18-8 second-half, and a slight 15-14 edge in ground balls. The Hawks and Hatters split 11 draw controls apiece, and the Hawks kept Stetson to just 1-of-6 in FPS.

Smith took a game-high six shots while McCallion was good for three ground balls and two caused turnovers to go with her one-goal, one-assist day. Gormley also impressed, adding two ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers in addition to her multi-goal game. Grey added a game-high six draw controls.

Senior goalkeeper Nora McGeever (5-3) earned the win, making eight saves and allowing just four goals in 51:22. In her season debut, junior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin made one save and allowed one goal in the final 8:38.

"Nora McGeever and our defense really stepped up today and set the tone starting off the beginning of the game," added Kahoe.

Saint Joseph's opens Atlantic 10 Conference action next Friday, March 27 against George Mason. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
