Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 OT Heartbreaker to Marist

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Marist's Brian Coyt scored the overtime match-winner in the 92nd minute as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped its season opener, 3-2, on Friday evening on Sweeney Field. The Hawks now stand at 0-1-0 while the Red Foxes improve to 1-0-0 on the 2015 season.

"Our guys came out and put a good game together," said head coach Don D'Ambra following the match. "We created a lot of attacking chances and we had a lot of new guys in different areas. Our back line was fairly new, so I thought these guys put a solid game together . . . This team will just keep getting better. There are a lot more positives than negatives. It's a really tough game to lose in overtime in a game where we thought we had outplayed the opponent. Hopefully we learn from this and get better because of it."

A Marist penalty kick preceeded the match-winner. Marist's Cameron Harr fired off a shot toward the right side of the net, but Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Jay Higbee (0-1-0) made the stop to keep the match alive for the Crimson and Gray.

However, the ball would rebound out to Coyt, who rocketed the match-winning goal just 1:46 into the overtime frame.

For the match, Saint Joseph's and Marist took an even 14 shots apiece while the Hawks held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard first as junior midfielder Sam Irvin found junior defender Coupar Lipp, who netted his first collegiate goal into the top-left corner to put the Hawks ahad, 1-0, in the 12th minute.

Marist struck back with under a minute to play until the halftime break as Maximillian Euler found Zachary Reed at the 44:02 mark.

The Red Foxes then took the lead in the 61st minute as Cameron Harr put a shot to the left of Saint Joseph's sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Edwards to give Marist the 2-1 advantage.

Less than four minutes later, however, the Hawks gained a bit of momentum as junior midfielder Bliss Harris found senior midfielder Tim Lazorko down the left wing. Lazorko launched a cross toward the middle of the box, where senior forward Emmanuel Temeh connected on a rocket over Marist goalkeeper Marc Rajovic (1-0-0) to equalize the score, 2-2, in the 64th minute.

Neither squad would score in the final 26:50 to send the match into overtime.

Saint Joseph's sent two goalkeepers between the pipes; Edwards allowed two goals in the first 67:31 while Higbee made two saves and allowed one score in the final 24:15.

The Hawks will play their next three matches on the road, beginning at Rider this Monday, August 31. SJU will then face UNLV and Utah Valley in the Johann Memorial Classic from September 4-6 in Las Vegas, Nev. before returning home to host LIU Brooklyn on September 13.

MATCH NOTES: Ted Foley, Heriberto Sevilla, and Lou Vilotti made their first collegiate appearances, with Foley getting the starting nod on the back line... Transfer Kevin Lockhart made his first appearance and start for the Crimson and Gray.
