Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Overtime Loss at Navy

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's Sam Bascom scored in the 96th minute as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team (1-6) fell to Navy, 1-0, at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md. on Saturday evening.

"I was extremely proud of the effort and performance of our team tonight," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "The game was very fast and intense. Navy high-pressed us for long periods, and our guys defended extremely well. We created some quality build-up offensive opportunities but could not convert enough of them into scoring chances. We need to continue to improve in the attacking third situations."

Sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (1-3) matched a career-high six saves in the full 95:03. Edwards made four first-half saves (3', 23', 47', 49') and two second-half saves (71', 73') to force the match into overtime.

"We did not allow too many opportunities, and Bobby made a couple of critical saves to keep us in the game," added D'Ambra.

For the match, Navy (3-3-1) outshot the Hawks 23-5, including a 10-0 second half. Saint Joseph's sophomore defender Tom Santilli fired off a team-high two shots on goal on a team-high two shots, both in overtime (91', 94'), but Navy goalkeeper Jackson Morgan made the pair of saves.

Freshman defender Eddie McCusker (22'), sophomore midfielder Matt Crawford (31'), and junior midfielder Sam Irvin (41') took first-half shots.

"Bliss Harris and Eddie battled in the middle of the field," added D'Ambra. "They controlled the backline much better and seem to be building some cohesiveness, which is critical. Eric Jordan was an engine in the middle of the field and showed great work rate and leadership."

The Hawks return to action this Tuesday, September 22 at Drexel. The Philadelphia Soccer Six match-up is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.

MATCH NOTES:The start of the game was delayed 50 minutes due to a light outage at the soccer facility... Crawford played a season-high 82 minutes... Junior defender Mike Stuski matched a season-high 70 minutes... Santilli took a career-high two shots and landed a career-high two shots on goal.
