Men's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw at Drexel

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad (1-6-1) battled to a 0-0 draw in Philadelphia Soccer Six action with Drexel (1-6-1) on Tuesday evening at Vidas Field. With the draw, the Hawks now own a 0-0-1 Soccer Six record while the Dragons conclude their Soccer Six season 0-1-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Edwards (1-3-1) made five saves in the full 110:00, including overtime stops in the 97th minute and 109th minute to earn his first clean sheet of the season and fifth career shutout.

"I was happy with our team's effort tonight," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "They battled through another overtime match. We played solid team defense and kept Drexel scoreless at their field, which was great."

SJU's defensive unit made a team save in the 51st minute to help preserve the shutout.

For the match, Drexel owned a slight 17-16 edge in shots, with both squads landing an even six shots on goal. Junior midfielder Eric Jordan and sophomore midfielder Matt Crawford led the squad with three shots while six different Hawks landed a shot on goal.

The Hawks put together their best pair of back-to-back scoring threats late into the second half as Jordan (72') and redshirt sophomore defender Ted Foley (73') fired off shots within just over a minute of one another, but Drexel's Jacob Jordan made the pair of saves.

Still scoreless after the first overtime, Saint Joseph's outshot Drexel 6-3 in the final 10:00. Junior midfielder Sam Irvin put pressure on Jordan early on (102') and senior forward Emmanuel Temeh nearly put the game away a minute later (103').

"I felt that we had a lot of dangerous offensive transitions that we could have executed more effectively," added D'Ambra. "Emmanuel [Temeh] had a phenomenal opportunity in the OT and could have won the game but missed the target."

The Hawks gained the match's final pair of scoring opportunities in the final minute of play; Crawford's shot was saved with 37 seconds remaining before Foley's attempt with 10 ticks to go was blocked by Drexel's defense.

Freshmen Derek MacKinnon (16') and Heriberto Sevilla (39') added shots on net for the Hawks in the first half.

"Our team keeps getting better as the season goes on," added D'Ambra. "I am optimistic about where we are at as a team."

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Friday, September 25 vs. Howard. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Sweeney Field.

MATCH NOTES: Edwards has now made five or more saves in four consecutive matches... Sophomore defender Tom Santilli played a career-high 53 minutes in his first collegiate start... Jordan and freshman defender Eddie McCusker both played career-high 110 minutes... Junior defender Mike Stuski played a career-high 94 minutes.
