Women's Basketball Drops Close Contest To Bucknell, 64-61

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's junior Adashia Franklyn had a career-high 18 points, but the Hawks fell to Bucknell, 64-61, Sunday afternoon at Hagan Arena.

Leading by as many as 15 points in the first half, Saint Joseph's (0-2) slowly saw its lead chipped away by the Bison. Down 59-58 with under 90 seconds, Bucknell used a 6-2 run to close out the game and earn the comeback win.

Junior guard/forward Chelsea Woods put the Hawks ahead 59-57 with 1:40 to play, but Claire DeBoer, Sune Swart and Kyi English combined to go 5-of-6 from the foul line over the next 1:23 to give Bucknell its biggest lead, 62-59.

Woods cut the deficit to one, 62-61, with six seconds to go, but Kaitlyn Slagus buried a pair of free throws and the Bison's defense thwarted a game-tying three-pointer opportunity by the Hawks in the final seconds.

Saint Joseph's opened the game on fire, going 10-16 from the floor in the first quarter to take a 23-10 lead.

Backed by 12 points from sophomore Alyssa Monaghan, SJU would maintain a double-digit edge at halftime as it went into the lockerroom up 33-22.

Bucknell (2-0) opened the third quarter with momentum as it scored the first seven points to make it 33-29 on a Swart layup at 7:11.

Woods would help the Hawks push their lead back to eight points, 41-33, on a layup at 2:14, but the Bison continued to erase the gap and tied the game at 41 on an English jumper just 17 seconds into the final quarter.

The Hawks regrouped though and used a 6-0 run midway through the quarter to open a 54-47 advantage on a Woods jumper.

The Bison would fight back to tie the game twice more before the final two minutes.

For the game, SJU knocked down 23-of-64 from the floor (35.9 percent), 3-of-11 from three-point range (27.3 percent) and 12-of-19 from the foul line (63.2 percent). The Hawks finished with just four turnovers, but were out rebounded 49-27.

Individually, Franklyn added a team-high seven rebounds to go with her 18 points. Woods ended the day with 15 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and a career-high six steals. Monaghan added 12 points, while senior Jaryn Garner finished with 10 points to mark the second straight game SJU has had four players score in double figures.

For Bucknell, Swart led all scorers with 25 points as the Bison finished the day 23-of-55 from the floor (41.8 percent), 3-of-3 from behind the arc (15.4 percent) and 16-of-21 from the foul line (76.2 percent).

The Hawks return to action Wednesday when they open the road portion of their schedule at Iona at 7 p.m.
