Under the direction of second-year head coach Alex Kahoe, Saint Joseph's returns 18 Hawks, including nine starters, from last year's squad and adds eight newcomers for the 2016 season. The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 Conference this season, according to the conference's preseason poll as announced on February 3.
Saturday's game will mark the ninth time in program history that the Hawks will face the Eagles; American owns the all-time series, 6-2. SJU owns a one-game winning streak against American having defeated the Eagles 13-12 in triple overtime on February 28 of last season. Prior to that match-up, the teams hadn't met since 2005. Under Kahoe's direction, Saint Joseph's is 1-0 against American.
In 23 seasons, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse program is 13-10 on opening day. The Hawks have opened the season on the road seven times, and are 2-5 in that capacity.
American went 4-12 as a member of the Patriot League last season. The Eagles enter Saturday's game coming off of back-to-back road losses at Drexel, 14-4, this past Sunday and #15 Johns Hopkins, 16-10, on Wednesday.
