Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Paced by junior midfielder Maggie Egan's career-high eight-point performance, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse squad (1-1) earned its first win of the season with a 13-10 victory over Monmouth on a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon on Sweeney Field. The home Hawks used a 6-1 run to start the second half to snap a nine-game losing streak for their first win of 2016.
"We are really excited about today's win," said head coach Alex Kahoe. "Our team really stepped up and brought things together that we've been focusing on in practice. In the first half, we did well at the draw and held strong as a defensive unit. In the second half, we really wanted to come out and be more of a threat offensively. We had seven different people get on the board, and overall, we came together as a team."
Trailing 4-3 coming out of the halftime break, Egan set the tone for the Crimson and Gray as she scored just 16 seconds into the second half to even the score, 4-4. Freshman midfielder Hayley Sabol had won the crucial draw to give the home Hawks that first possession of the second half.
Monmouth responded just 38 seconds later to regain the lead, but Saint Joseph's tore off on a 5-0 run to jump out to a 9-5 lead with 17:57 remaining in regulation. Senior defender Caroline Hagan then launched a perfect pass up to rookie midfielder Sinead Brierley, who buried her first collegiate goal to give the home Hawks their four-goal advantage.
Monmouth scored two of the game's next three goals to close the scoring, 10-7, at the 11:58 mark, but Smith (9:18) and Sabol (7:26) put away back-to-back scores to once again extend SJU's lead, 12-7.
The visiting Hawks put together a trio of consecutive goals to close the deficit to two, 12-10, with 3:48 remaining in regulation, but Egan found junior attacker Nora McCallion, who buried the game's final goal with 1:41 remaining in regulation en route to the 13-10 victory.
