Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Midshipmen's Ericson Bean scored in the 34th minute to snap the Hawks' two-match win streak as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer squad fell to Navy, 1-0, on Saturday evening on Sweeney Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-4 overall while Navy improves to 2-3-1.
"It was a game where one play defined the whole game," said head coach Don D'Ambra following the match. "We were pressing them the entire second half. We had some pretty good chances in the first half . . . We just have to be a little more clincial in executing in those final passes and getting a head on it in the box. One play could've changed the game. We just didn't get it."
Navy scored on a header off of a corner kick assist from Sam Bascom, who had scored the overtime match-winner against the Hawks last season.
For the match, Navy owned a 9-6 edge in shots, while the Hawks earned five of eight total corner kicks. Senior forward Mori Diane and sophomore midfielder Kyle Lochbihler took two shots apiece, while Lochbihler and junior midfielder Matt Crawford landed SJU's lone shots on goal.
Lochbihler was a spark of energy for the Hawks in a career-high 58 minutes off the bench on Saturday evening.
"Kyle is the typical kid that we try to encourage to come in and earn time, continue to improve and learn," added D'Ambra of the sophomore midfielder. "You get rewarded based on what you do, and he is a great example of that. This year, he is embracing his opportunities and showing that he wants to be out here."
Junior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell (2-4-0) made four saves in the full-match effort, with two coming in each half.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Tuesday, September 20 against Villanova in Philadelphia Soccer Six action. Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
