Box Score MERION STATION, Pa. – Three different Hawks found the scoresheet on Friday as the Saint Joseph's field hockey team routed Bucknell, 4-0, at Ellen Ryan Field.
Sophomore Anna Willocks tallied two goals and added an assist, while junior Jackalyn Pauling and freshman Kayla Walker contributed a goal and an assist apiece.
"There was some really quality hockey [today]," said head coach Lynn Farquhar. "It was a team effort, which was great. Bucknell is a tough team to compete against; they have good structure and they play hard, so our goal was to keep it simple and let the ball do the work. When we did that, we saw some pretty hockey."
After a tight first half hour, Saint Joseph's (2-1) broke through and earned a penalty corner opportunity. Willocks' blast beat Bucknell's Emily Finn to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
SJU doubled its advantage through Pauling as the junior tucked home a rebound to extend the margin to 2-0.
Just over three minutes later, Willocks found Walker in front of an open cage and fed her a perfect pass. The rookie made it count, scoring her first career goal to push the lead to 3-0.
Walker then returned the favor with 13:55 to go, dish to Willocks, who spun and fired a shot over Finn to close out the scoring.
Bucknell (1-1) had one last chance to get on the board with a penalty corner after time expired, but freshman goalkeeper Victoria Kammerinke stacked the pads to keep out a shot from Nicole Rupnik and preserve the clean sheet.
"Defensively, our playing shape and structure is important, and our backfield did that today," Farquhar said. "Even defensively, we let the ball do the work, and we closed the middle. We were a bit more proactive than reactive, which is huge as a defensive unit. It was a team effort on both the attacking and the defensive side."
Kammerinke made five saves in the win, while Finn made eight for the Bison. SJU outshot Bucknell, 16-7, on the afternoon.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday, closing out their four-game homestand against rival Villanova. Game time is set for noon at Ellen Ryan Field.
