Women's Basketball Runs Past Rhode Island, 75-49

KINGSTON, R.I. - Backed by a combined 37 points from junior Chelsea Woods and senior Amanda Fioravanti, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed Rhode Island, 75-49, Wednesday afternoon at the Ryan Center.

Taking control from the tip, the Hawks (8-12, 5-3 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 17-12 edge after the first quarter.

Up by five to start the second period, Saint Joseph's used a 14-0 run over the opening 5:19 as a jumper by sophomore Sarah Veilleux put her team ahead 31-12. The Hawks continued to pull away from there as they outscored the Rams, 30-11, to take a 47-23 lead into halftime.

Rhode Island (4-16, 0-8 A-10) would get no closer than 19 points in the second half as Saint Joseph's held the Rams to just 34.6 percent shooting (18-of-52), while knocking down 52.8 percent 28-of-53) at the other end.

Individually, Woods finished with a game-high 19 points, while Fioravanti matched her career-high with 18 points and added eight rebounds, five steals, three blocked shots and two assists.

Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday when it hosts St. Bonaventure. Game time is set for 3 p.m. and will air nationally on American Sports Network.
