Box Score PHILADELPHIA - Backed by a balanced offensive attack that saw five Hawks finish in double figures, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team downed Saint Peter's, 87-58, to win the 24th Annual Hawk Classic on Sunday afternoon at Hagan Arena.
Behind 16 points and six rebounds from Hawk Classic MVP Sarah Veilleux, Saint Joseph's improved to 5-0 on the season with the win and captured its 11th Hawk Classic title in prorgram history.
Playing just its second home game of the year, Saint Joseph's led wire to wire as it held the Peacoacks (3-3) at a distance for most of the game.
Opening a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter, the Hawks saw their advantage slowly chipped away as Saint Peter's came within three, 30-27, on a three-pointer by Brianna Tarabocchia at 6:16 of the second quarter.
After trading baskets, Saint Joseph's closed out the period on a 19-3 run as a pair of Veilleux free throws pushed her team ahead 51-32 at the break.
Saint Peter's would get no closer than 17 points in the second half as the Hawks moved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 48.5 percent from the field (32-of-66), hit 46.7 percent from deep (7-of-15) and 64 percent from the foul line (16-of-25). The Hawks additionally finished with a 46-27 edge in rebounds, leading to 16 second-chance points.
Individually, seniors Chelsea Woods and Adashia Franklyn were named to the Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team. Woods finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Franklyn added 10 points and five rebounds. Junior Alyssa Monaghan had a game-high 18 points and five assists, while senior Amanda Fioravanti added with 10 points and eight rebounds.
At the other end, Saint Peter's was led by Alyssa Velles' 13 points, while the Peacocks shot 36.2 percent from the floor (21-of-58), 42.1 percent from behind the arc (8-of-19) and hit 8-of-12 from the foul line.
Joining Woods and Franklyn on the Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team were Saint Peter's Velles, Delaware's Nicole Enabosi and Eastern Illinois' Grace Lennox.
In the consolation game, Delaware topped Eastern Illinois, 66-37.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday as it opens Big 5 play at Temple at 7 p.m.
