Box Score The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team got a combined 32 points from senior Chelsea Woods and junior Alyssa Monaghan, but fell to city rival Drexel, 65-58, on Sunday afternoon at Hagan Arena.
Looking to snap a four-game losing streak, the Hawks (5-5) jumped out to an early 17-8 lead backed by six of Monaghan's 16 points.
The Dragons (7-4) chipped away at the SJU advantage and took its first lead, 28-26, on a pair of free throws by Aubree Brown with 1:58 to go in the second quarter.
Drexel's lead would grow to five in the third quarter, while Saint Joseph's battled back to make it a two-point game, 47-45, with 7:21 to play in the fourth on a layup by junior Sarah Veilleux.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, they'd get no closer as they turned the ball over six times and went 4-of-12 from the field over the final seven minutes, while the Dragons closed the game going 12-of-14 from the foul line.
Overall, the Hawks hit 22-of-44 from the floor and went 10-of-16 from the foul line, but shot just 4-of-17 from three-point range (23.5 percent) and turned the ball over 22 times.
Individually, Woods added four blocks, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Monaghan handed out four assists and had five rebounds to go with 16 points. Veilleux was the third Hawk in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Megan Marecic led three Dragons win double figures with a game-high 20 points as Drexel finished 20-of-52 from the field (38.5 percent), 3-of-13 from behind the arc (23.1 percent) and 22-of-26 from the foul line (84.6 percent).
The Hawks are back in action December 20-21 at the Gator Holiday Classic. SJU opens versus Princeton on December 20 at 2:30 p.m.
