Women's Basketball Stumbles Against Duquesne, 61-42

Box Score

The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team got a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds from junior Sarah Veilleux, but fell to Duquesne, 61-42, on Wednesday evening at Hagan Arena.

Shooting a season-low 25.4 percent from the field, the Hawks (9-10, 4-3 Atlantic 10) had an early two-point lead erased midway through the second quarter as the Dukes used a 15-0 run to pull away.

Ahead 19-17 on a layup by senior Adashia Franklyn at the 5:43 mark of the second, Saint Joseph's went cold from there as Duquesne began to build its lead. Held scoreless for a nearly eight-minute span that carried over into the third quarter, the Hawks went 0-for-8 from the field and turned the ball over six times, while the Dukes' Conor Richardson capped her team's run with a three-pointer to put the visitors ahead 32-19.

Falling behind by as many as 18, Saint Joseph's chipped away at Duquesne's lead and made it a 48-38 difference on back-to-back baskets by graduate student Jaryn Garner with 6:37 to play in the game.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, they'd get no closer than 10 points from there as the Dukes earned their first win over SJU on Hawk Hill.

For the game, Saint Joseph's hit just 15-of-59 from the floor and went 2-of-14 from three-point range (14.3 percent). Garner matched Veilleux with a team-best eight rebounds and added seven points, while graduate student Amanda Fioravanti finished with nine points, five rebounds and two assists.

At the other end, Julijana Vojinovic led Duquesne with a game-high 16 points and added 10 rebounds and five assists as the Dukes shot 39 percent from the field (23-of-59) and 23.8 percent from behind the arc (5-of-21).

Both team went 10-of-14 from the foul line.

The Hawks are back in action on Sunday at Big 5 rival La Salle at 1 p.m.
