Box Score Saint Joseph's head coach Cindy Griffin earned her 300th victory with the Hawks as her squad downed La Salle, 75-64, on Sunday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.
Led by senior Adashia Franklyn's 19 points and 15 rebounds, the Hawks improved to to 5-3 in the Atlantic 10, 10-10 overall and finished Big 5 play with a 1-3 record. Griffin, now in her 17th season with the Hawks, improved to 300-223 as head coach at SJU and is now 348-256 overall as a head coach over 20 seasons with the Hawks and at Loyola-Maryland.
After a back-and-forth start to the city rivalry game, SJU put together a 14-3 run in the second quarter to start to pull away from the Explorers. Down 24-21, the Hawks opened a 35-27 edge as graduate student Amanda Fioravanti capped the spurt on a layup with 39 seconds left in the period.
Ahead 37-29 to start the third quarter, Saint Joseph's carried momentum into the period as it opened with a 12-2 run to jump out to a 49-31 lead on a layup by junior Sarah Veilleux.
Outscoring the Explorers 30-13 in the quarter, the Hawks pushed their lead to as many as 29 and never looked back en route to the win.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 51.7 percent from the field (31-of-60), 42.9 percent from three-point range (3-of-7) and 71.4 percent from the foul line (10-of-14).
Franklyn added three blocks and two assists to go with her season-high 19 points, while Fioravanti added 15 points, 13 rebounds and a game-high five assists. Veilleux chipped in with 13 points and was joined in double figures by classmate Alyssa Monaghan with 13 points and four assists.
At the other end, La Salle shot 39.6 percent from the floor (19-of-48), hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 23-of-30 from the foul line (76.7 percent).
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday at VCU at 6 p.m.
