Box Score Holding off a late rally by Loyola Maryland, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team picked up a 49-46 victory in the consolation game of the 25th Hawk Classic on Sunday at Hagan Arena.
Down by as many as 13 in the first half, Saint Joseph's used a strong third quarter, in which it outscored the Greyhounds 25-8, to take a 43-34 edge into the final period.
Loyola Maryland rallied midway through the fourth as a layup by Isabella Therien made it 47-44 with 4:15 to play.
The Hawks' Mary Sheehan answered with a jumper from the foul line to push her team ahead by five, but Therien followed with another basket to make it a one-possession game, 49-46.
From there, defense took over at both ends of the court.
Loyola Maryland got a crucial stop on the Hawks with 19 seconds to play and held for the final shot. Moving the ball down the left wing, Alexis Gray lost control as SJU senior Alyssa Monaghan stole the ball and dribbled out the clock.
For the game, the Hawks shot 32.1 percent from the floor (18-of-56), and 18.2 percent from three-point range (2-of-11), but hit 11-of-15 from the foul line (73.3 percent) and finished with a 42-33 edge in rebounds.
Individually, Mayock added seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while senior Michala Clay grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and added nine points. Monaghan, who was named to the Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team, finished with five points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Therien led two Greyhounds in double figures with a game-high 19 points. As a team, Loyola Maryland finished the day 15-of-51 from the floor (29.4 percent), 5-of-14 from behind the arc (35.7 percent) and hit 11-of-15 from the foul line.
Boston College captured the tournament title with a 112-61 victory over Rider as Eagles' Marnelle Garraud was named MVP. Emma Guy and Taylor Ortlepp of Boston College, Rider's Stella Johnson and Loyola Maryland's Therien were named to the Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Hawks (2-4) are back in action on Thursday when they host Columbia at 7 p.m.
