Women's Basketball Drops Defensive Battle At Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - In a defensive matchup that saw neither team shoot 33 percent, Delaware held off a late rally by the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team to top the Hawks, 48-39, on Friday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Shooting 28.6 percent (16-56) for the game, Saint Joseph's moved to 4-8 on the season despite the first career double-double from freshman Katie Mayock (11 points and 13 rebounds).

Down by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, the Hawks fought back to make it a six-point game, 44-38, on a layup by Mayock with 2:12 to play in the fourth. 

Delaware (5-7) answered back with a layup late into its next possession and held SJU to just one free throw from there to secure the victory.

Along with shooting 28.6 percent from the floor, the Hawks were held to just 1-of-13 from three-point range (7.7 percent) and went 6-of-10 from the foul line.

Mayock finished the game going 5-for-12 from the field and 1-of-2 from the foul line and added a game-high three blocks to go with a season-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Lula Roig came off the bench to add 11 points and four rebounds, while senior Alyssa Monaghan finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.

At the other end, Delaware shot 32.3 percent overall (21-for-65), went 2-of-8 from behind the arc and 4-of-7 from the foul line. Jasmine Dickey led a balanced Blue Hens offense as she finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Makeda Nicholas grabbed 10 boards and added eight points.

Saint Joseph's caps non-conference play on New Years's Eve as the Hawks head to Navy for a 6 p.m. tip.
