Box Score A last-second shot by Saint Joseph's senior Kristalyn Baisden missed its mark as Navy held on to top the Hawks, 49-48, on Monday evening at Alumni Hall.
Down 49-46 with under 10 second to play in their non-conference finale, the Hawks got the ball to Baisden in the left corner, who quickly fired a shot and was fouled on the play.
Baisden made the first two free throws, but missed the third. However SJU got the ball back as a Navy defender stepped out of bounds with a rebound.
After a timeout by Saint Joseph's with :02.5 to go, Baisden's last second shot from the right corner missed the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Falling behind 4-0 to start the game, the Hawks finished the first quarter strong with a 13-0 run to take a 13-4 edge.
Saint Joseph's would push its lead to as many as 10, 19-9, in the second quarter on a jumper by rookie Katie Mayock at 5:57.
Behind a 10-2 run, Navy made it a 21-19 game on a three-pointer by Cailin Duffy with :40 left in the quarter.
Mayock would push the Hawks' lead to 23-19 at the half as she beat the shot clock buzzer with a driving layup to end the period.
The Hawks carried momentum into the third quarter as they pushed their lead to 27-20 on a pair of free throws by Michala Clay at 7:33.
Navy battled back though to retake the lead early in the fourth quarter. Behind a 16-6 run, the Midshipmen took a 36-33 lead on a layup by Jennifer Coleman with 7:40 to play.
After trading baskets back and forth, the Hawks tied the game at 44 all on a Baisden three-pointer and went ahead on a pair of Mayock free throws with 1:31 to go.
Sophie Gatzounas answered with a three to give Navy a 47-46 lead, and after a defensive stop, Mary Kate Ulasewicz added a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to make it 49-46 before the frantic final minutes.
Both teams finished the game 16-of-48 from the field (33.3 percent) and each hit three three-pointers, while Navy went 14-of-19 from the foul line and SJU finished 13-for-21.
Individually, Mayock led SJU with 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, while senior Whisper Fisher added nine points and six rebounds. Sophomore Lula Roig chipped in with eight points and senior Alyssa Monaghan finished with eight points.
Saint Joseph's opens its Atlantic 10 schedule at VCU on Saturday at 1 p.m.
