Women's Basketball Downs La Salle on Senior Day, 70-49

Outscoring La Salle 41-14 in the second half, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team battled back from a double-digit deficit to earn a 70-49 victory over the Explorers on Senior Day at Hagan Arena.

Falling behind by as many as 11 in the first half, the Hawks shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half (14-of-25) and held the Explorers to just 24 percent (6-of-24) to complete the comeback win to improve to 14-12 overall and 9-5 in the Atlantic 10.

Down 30-19 in the second quarter, Saint Joseph's fought back to make it just a six-point deficit by halftime, 35-29, as it outscored the Explorers 6-2 over the final 1:36 of the period.

Scoring the first six points of the third, the Hawks tied the game at 35 all on a layup by junior Alyssa Monaghan.

Taking its first lead of the game, 38-37, on a free throw by Chelsea Woods at the 4:56 mark of the third, Saint Joseph's would hold a 49-47 advantage into the final quarter.

Ahead by two, the Hawks dominated at both ends of the court in the fourth quarter as they outscored La Salle, 21-2 to pull away for the win. On the offensive side, Saint Joseph's went 6-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc and 7-of-7 from the foul line, while on defense the Hawks caused nine turnovers and held La Salle to just 1-of-10 from the field, with its lone basket coming with 1:37 to play.

Overall, Saint Joseph's went 25-of-50 from the field for the game, hit 3-of-8 from three-point range and 17-of-20 from the foul line. 

Individually, junior Sarah Veilleux led four Hawks in double figures with 19 points, while Woods added 17 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. Graduate student Amanda Fioravanti chipped in with 12 points and had three steals in a reserve role, while Monaghan added a a game-high five assists and had 10 points.

At the other end, Adreana Miller led two Explorers in double figures with 13 points, while La Salle finished the game shooting 37.5 percent from the field (21-of-56), 30.8 percent from behind the arc (4-of-13) and 3-of-4 from the foul line.

The Hawks cap the home portion of their regular season schedule on Tuesday when they host George Washington at 7 p.m.
