Box Score BRONX, N.Y. - Saint Joseph's Chelsea Woods' layup with :01 to play lifted the Hawks' women's basketball team to a 52-50 victory at Fordham on Saturday afternoon at Rose Hill Gym.
With Saturday's win in their regular season finale, the Hawks improved to 15-13 overall and finished 10-6 in Atlantic 10 contests to secure the sixth seed for the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship. Saint Joseph's will host 11th seed VCU on Tuesday in a First Round matchup at Hagan Arena at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Quarterfinals on Friday at the Richmond Coliseum.
In a defensive battle that came down to the wire, Woods came through for the Hawks in the final moments for the second time in two weeks. Tied at 50 with :22 seconds to go, Saint Joseph's worked the ball to Woods on the left wing. Glancing at the clock and working into the paint, Wood drove to the right block and slid in for the go-ahead basket with :01 seconds to play.
Out of a Fordham timeout, the Rams' got the ball into the corner to Mary Goulding, only to have her game-winning three-pointer blocked by the Hawks' Sarah Veilleux as the buzzer sounded.
In the first half, Saint Joseph's opened a 12-point advantage on a pair of free throws by Amanda Fioravanti with 2:16 to play in the second quarter.
Fordham (21-8, 12-4 A-10) responded with a 19-5 as the host Rams took their first lead of the game, 31-29, on a three-pointer by Lauren Holden at 5:48 of the third quarter.
Neither team would lead by more than three points from there as the game entered the final minute of the fourth quarter tied at 48.
A layup by Woods with 32 seconds to play put the Hawks ahead 50-48, but G'mrice Davis tied the game 10 seconds later with a pair of free throws.
Out of a timeout, Saint Joseph's would work it to Woods for the game winner.
For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 39.3 percent from the field (22-of-56) and hit 8-of-10 from the foul line, despite going 0-for-6 from behind the arc.
Individually, Woods finished with a game-high 24 points, while graduate student Jaryn Garner grabbed a team-best five rebounds and chipped in with five points.
At the other end, Davis finished with a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Fordham as they finsihed the game shooting 31.9 percent from the field (15-of-47), 30.8 percent from behind the arc (4-of-13) and 16-of-20 from the foul line.
The 2018 A-10 Championship will feature six first-round games being played on campus sites on Tuesday, Feb. 27 before heading to Richmond, Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4 for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games.
All first round and quarterfinal games will be streamed live on the A-10 Network through Atlantic10.com. Saturday's semifinals will air at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, while Sunday's championship final will be on ESPNU and streamed on the ESPN App at noon.
