Box Score SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team has advanced to the Second Round of the Postseason WNIT as the Hawks topped Seton Hall, 75-57, on Wednesday in a First Round matchup at Walsh Gymnasium.
With the victory, Saint Joseph's moves on to play either West Virginia or Bucknell. Game date, time and location will be released later this week.
Falling behind early 6-2 to start, Saint Joseph's (19-14) quickly flipped the momentum and took full control of the game. Using a12-2 run, the Hawks opened a 14-8 on a layup by Jaryn Garner.
Ahead 20-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks pushed their lead to as many as 13 in the second before heading into halftime up 39-28.
Seton Hall scored the opening basket of the third quarter to make it a nine-point contest, but that would be as close as the Pirates would get. Senior Chelsea Woods, who finished with a game-high 20 points, capped a 13-2 run with a pair of free throws with 4:56 to go in the period to make it 52-32.
Saint Joseph's allowed Seton Hall to get no closer than 13 points from there as the Hawks picked up their first postseason victory since 2014.
For the game, SJU shot 45.6 percent from the field 26-of-57), 30.8 percent from three-point range (4-of-13) and 76 percent from the foul line (19-of-25).
Individually, Woods added a game-high 11 rebounds to go with her 20 points, while graduate student Amanda Fioravanti tallied 19 points and had four assists and four steals and matched a program record for games played in a season with her 33rd. Junior Alyssa Monaghan chipped in with 15 points and four assists, with Garner adding a career-high 12 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals.
At the other end, Seton Hall shot 43.6 percent from the field (24-of-55) and 72.7 percent from the foul line (8-of-11), but went just 1-of-14 from behind the arc (7.1 percent). Selena Philoxy led the Pirates with 13 points as they capped the season at 16-16.
Game Notes: The Hawks finished with with a 35-30 edge in rebounds and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points...SJU forced Seton Hall into 23 turnovers and converted those into 19 points...The Hawks' starters scored 73 of the team's 75 points...Junior Kristalyn Baisden added seven points, three assists and three rebounds in a start...Redshirt sophomore Whisper Fisher finished with two points, two rebounds a block and a steal...Rookie Lula Roig added two rebounds and an assist...Seniors Avery Marz and Candace Belvedere and junior Michala Clay each played one minute...The Hawks are now 5-8 all-time versus Seton Hall...SJU improved its record in the Postseason to 8-10 and move on to the Second Round for the first time since 2012...The Hawks will set a new program record for games played in a season with their next contest.
