Women's Basketball Flies Past St. Bonaventure, 66-41

Behind solid play at both ends of the floor, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team topped St. Bonaventure, 66-41, on Sunday afternoon at Hagan Arena. The Hawks got a combined 47 points from seniors Alyssa Monaghan and Kristalyn Baisden and sophomore Lula Roig as they held the Bonnies to 32.7 percent shooting to improve to 1-2 in the Atlantic 10.

Ahead 10-8 with under four minutes to play in the first quarter, Saint Joseph's began to pull away from St. Bonaventure behind a 13-0 run to end the period. Backed by eight of Baisden's 16 points during the stretch, the Hawks opened a 23-8 edge after 10 minutes of play. 

After trading baskets in the second quarter, SJU entered the third up 34-19 and began to pull away even further. A 9-0 run early on pushed the Hawks' lead to 43-21 on a jumper by Michala Clay at 6:19.

St. Bonaventure would get no closer than 16 points from there as SJU breezed to their third straight win over the Bonnies.

For the game, the Hawks shot 41.4 percent from the floor (24-58), 44.4 percent from three-point range (8-18) and 83.3 percent from the foul line (10-12).

Monaghan led all scorers with 19 points and added seven rebounds, while Baisden had a season-high 16 points to go with three rebounds and two assists. Roig finished the game with 12 points, three steals and three rebounds.

At the other end, the Bonnies went 17-52 from the field, including 3-18 from behind the arc and 4-12 from the line. Deja Francis led SBU with 10 points and four assists as they moved to 4-12 overall and 1-2 in the A-10.

The Hawks return to the road with a 7 p.m. matchup at Duquesne on Wednesday.
