ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Katie Mayock grabbed an offensive rebound and put back the game-winning shot as time expired to send the Saint Joseph's women's basketball squad past St. Bonaventure, 61-60, in Atlantic 10 action at the Reilly Center on Wednesday evening. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Hawks (8-10, 2-4 A-10) while the Bonnies drop to 4-15 (1-5 A-10).
"I knew Kaliah [Henderson] was going to take the shot and that I had to be in there ready to rebound," said Mayock of the game-winning play. "That moment was awesome. I've never experienced anything like that."
"Katie's play was unbelievable," added head coach
Cindy Griffin. "She was in the right place at the right time. She knew that was going to be her role, to get in there and rebound and clean up anything that came her way. She's been in that situation a couple times, and I'm just so happy for her to see her convert on her effort."
Saint Joseph's five starters - junior guard
Lula Roig (10 points, team-high six rebounds), freshman forward
Gabby Smalls (10 points), senior guard
Nailah Delinois (eight points), junior guard
Mary Sheehan (eight points), and sophomore guard
Katie Jekot (eight points, team-high four assists) combined for 44 of SJU's 61 points in the victory.
"It was very balanced," added Griffin of SJU's scoring performance. "We had different scoring opportunities from different players. We went a little bit cold there for awhile, but then
Kaliah Henderson (game-high three steals) came in and gave us a little bit of a punch. It's going to take all of us to step up, and I'm really proud of the way they stepped up."
With the Hawks up by seven, 55-48, with 4:30 remaining in regulation, St. Bonaventure erased its deficit with a furious 8-0 run to go ahead by one, 56-55, with 1:30 to play. On the ensuing possession, Smalls battled for an offensive board and put back a lay-up to put the Hawks back ahead, 57-56, with 43 ticks to go, but SBU's Deja Francis hit a pair of FTs on the other end (:32) to get the lead back for the Bonnies.
Six seconds out of an SJU timeout (:32), Henderson attacked from the right side of the key and put away a lay-up to put the Hawks back up by one, 59-58, with 26 seconds remaining. The Bonnies made a go-head lay-up out of their timeout (:21) to send the Hawks down the floor down by one and with one final opportunity, and Mayock grabbed an offensive board off of a missed jumper (:11) to stretch that last opportunity a bit longer; 10 seconds later, Mayock secured her second offensive rebound of the possession to set her up for the Crimson and Gray heroics.
Paced by Roig's 10 first-half points and a 62.5-percent (15-of-24) shooting performance from the field, the Hawks took a 33-28 edge into the halftime break. SJU then used an 11-3 run in the third quarter - in which it kept the Bonnies scoreless from the field for 5:29 - to extend its lead by seven, 49-42, entering the fourth.
