RICHMOND, Va. – In her second career start, freshman forward
Gabby Smalls scored 14 points to lead all SJU scorers, but the Saint Joseph's women's basketball squad fell to VCU, 47-40, in Atlantic 10 action at the
Stuart C. Siegel Center on Wednesday evening. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Hawks, who even out at 7-7 overall (1-1 A-10), while the Rams improve to 7-8 (2-0 A-10).
Smalls scored all 14 of her points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter alone, as she shot 5-of-7 from the field to go with six rebounds, two steals, and a block in 22 minutes of play. The scoring total marks her second-highest of the season, and the rookie now averages 16.5 points per game when she is in the starting five.
Sophomore guard Katie Jekot chipped in 10 points and a team-high three assists while junior guard Mary Sheehan pulled down a season-high eight rebounds and junior guard Lula Roig added seven points (7-of-8 FT) and six boards.
How It Happened
Q1 – Saint Joseph's opened the game on a 6-0 run as sophomore guard
Katie Jekot hit a three-pointer to open the scoring at the 6:17 mark, junior guard
Lula Roig went 1-of-2 from the free throw line (5:44), and junior guard
Mary Sheehan hit a pull-up jumper in the inside center of the paint (4:49). The Hawks held the Rams to 0-of-10 shooting from the field (and 0-of-3 from beyond the arc) in the opening 5:20 and went on the keep VCU off the scoreboard until the 2:55 mark; from that point, VCU scored four of the final six points of the quarter as the opening 10:00 ended 8-6, in favor of the Hawks.
Q2 – VCU outscored SJU 15-4 in the second quarter and scored the opening 11 points on three lay-ups and a string of free throws to take a 17-8 advantage by the 4:18 mark. Sophomore forward
Katie Mayock hit a nice turnaround lay-up to end that run, but the Rams would close out the half by scoring four of its final six points to take a 21-12 lead into the break.

Q3 – SJU clawed back to outscore VCU 15-14 in the third quarter, pulling to within six, 35-27 entering the final 10:00 of play. Senior guard

Gabby Smalls hit two free throws (6:12) and a lay-up (5:16) and Jekot mirrored with a lay-up (3:48) and two free throws (3:13) to pull the Hawks to within two points, 27-25, with minutes to go in the third. VCU responded by closing the quarter on an 8-2 run.
Q4 – Smalls dominated in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of SJU's 13 points, but after her lay-up at the 7:49 mark, VCU tore off on an 8-2 run to take a 12-point advantage, 43-31, into the final 2:20. Jekot hit her second three-pointer of the night with 2:01 to go to close the Hawks to within nine, 43-34, and Smalls hit a pair of free throws and a beauty of a jumper from outside of the paint (1:09) that appeared to have the power to shift the momentum, but the Rams shot 4-of-5 from the stripe to close out regulation.
