RICHMOND, Va. – In her second career start, freshman forward Gabby Smalls scored 14 points to lead all SJU scorers, but the Saint Joseph's women's basketball squad fell to VCU, 47-40, in Atlantic 10 action at the Stuart C. Smalls scored all 14 of her points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter alone, as she shot 5-of-7 from the field to go with six rebounds, two steals, and a block in 22 minutes of play. The scoring total marks her second-highest of the season, and the rookie now averages 16.5 points per game when she is in the starting five.

The Hawks held the Rams to 0-of-10 shooting from the field (and 0-of-3 from beyond the arc) in the opening 5:20 and went on the keep VCU off the scoreboard until the 2:55 mark; from that point, VCU scored four of the final six points of the quarter as the opening 10:00 ended 8-6, in favor of the Hawks.

Q2 – VCU outscored SJU 15-4 in the second quarter and scored the opening 11 points on three lay-ups and a string of free throws to take a 17-8 advantage by the 4:18 mark.
