ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Joseph's softball team wrapped its opening weekend of the season as the Hawks went 2-3 at the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Classic. Saint Joseph's split its games on Saturday, downing Bethune-Cookman 10-1 and falling to Appalachian State 10-3, and wrapped up play with a 4-2 loss to Lehigh on Sunday.
How It Happened
Game 1
• Saint Joseph's jumped out two a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as
Kirstin Cox and
Caela Abadie picked up RBIs.
• Bethune-Cookman made it 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly.
•
Jancarla Herrera scored on a RBI single by Cox in the second to make it 3-1.
•
Carly Rybinski made it 4-1 as she trotted home off a throwing error on a stolen base attempt in the second.
•
Erica Lawrence singled home
Jessica Gaughan in the third, and
Molly Kapala singled home Rybinski in the fourth to push the lead to 6-1.
• The Hawks added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh and coast to a 10-1 victory.
•
Ashley Stokes earned the victory as she allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out a pair.
Game 2
• Appalachian State jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a grand slam in the top of the first and added two more runs in the third and the fifth innings to open an 8-0 edge.
•
Sarah Ostaszewski doubled home
Erica Lawrence in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-1.
• Ostaszewski came around to score later that inning on a fielding error on a ball hit by
Kirstin Cox.
• The Hawks cut the deficit to 8-3 in the sixth as
Ashley Hession scored on an fielding error off a ball struck by
Jancarla Herrera.
• Appalachian State added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Sidney Russell.
•
Amanda Herr fell to 1-2 on the season as she allowed four earned runs on five hits over two 2.0 innings.
Game 3
• Lehigh opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Lainey Stephenson scored on a fielding error off a single by Reva Alderman, with Karsen O'Rourke scoring later that inning on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.
• The Mountain Hawks opened a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Emily Cimino.
• Saint Joseph's made it 3-1 in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by
Jessica Gaughan that scored
Molly Kapala.
• A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth extended Lehigh's lead to 4-1.
• A solo home run by Kapala made it 4-2 in the sixth, but Lehigh closed it out allowing just one hit from there.
•
Chelsea Evans fell to 0-1 on the season as she allowed two earned runs and seven hits over 4.0 innings.

The Hawks are back in action Friday at the Fairfield Crabtree Invitational. Saint Joseph's opens play at 10 a.m. versus Indiana before facing host N.C. State at 5:30 p.m.
