Baseball Falls to West Virginia, 5-1

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped the middle game of its weekend trip to the Brittain Resorts Invitational, falling to West Virginia by a 5-1 score at TicketReturn.com Field.  Ryan Devine turned in an outstanding performance on the mound, allowing just two runs in eight innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• West Virginia (5-1) got on the board first as Paul McIntosh homered to left.  The Mountaineers would double their lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Matt McCormick.

• WVU's Ryan Bergert kept the Hawks at bay but SJU finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Nate Thomas hit his second home run in as many days to cut the deficit to 2-1.

• WVU would tack on three in the top of the ninth as McIntosh brought one home on a fielder's choice before a sacrifice attempt by Kevin Brophy drove in two to set the final score.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Devine turned in the longest outing of the season by a Hawk starter, tossing eight innings and allowing two runs on just three hits while striking out five.  He took the hard-luck loss, falling to 0-1 on the year, while Bergert moved to 1-0 after allowing a run on two hits and fanning 14.
