Saint Joseph's picked up its 50th program win over UMass with a 55-54 home victory on February 13 of last season, and the Hawks' 50 wins over the Minutewomen are the second-most against any opponent, trailing SJU's 56 vs. Rhode Island. SJU has won eight of its last ten meetings against UMass, dating back to January 22, 2011, and owns the series 50-11.
On January 11 of this season, plagued by 23 turnovers and 15-of-50 shooting from the field, Saint Joseph's fell to UMass on the road, 61-43. SJU split up 36 of its points among five players as junior guard
Lula Roig, freshman forward
Gabby Smalls, and freshman combo guard
Jaden Walker scored eight apiece and senior guard
Nailah Delinois and sophomore forward
Elizabeth Marsicano chipped in six each.
Saint Joseph's ranks second in the A-10 and 21st nationally in scoring defense, allowing an average of just 55.8 points per game.
The Hawks were predicted to finish 10th in the A-10 this year, according to the
2019-20 A-10 Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll conducted by the league's 14 head coaches and announced on October 29, while UMass was predicted to finish eighth.
Last time out, despite a 13-point effort from sophomore forward
Katie Jekot and a near double-double from freshman guard
Kaliah Henderson, Saint Joseph's dropped an Atlantic 10 match-up to George Mason, 54-49, at Hagan Arena on Saturday, February 22.
