ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Billikens used a 13-2 run to open the third quarter to pull away and hand the Saint Joseph's women's basketball squad a 63-48 loss at Saint Louis at Chaifetz Arena on Thursday evening. The Hawks now fall to 8-14 overall (2-8 A-10) while the Billikens improve to 13-9 (5-4 A-10).
Sophomore forward
Katie Mayock led the Hawks in scoring with 12 points (4-of-6 FG) while junior guard
Lula Roig added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds and sophomore forward
Elizabeth Marsicano drained a career-high nine points on a career-high three three-pointers.
How It Happened
Q1 – Trailing 2-0 after a slow offensive start, Saint Joseph's went on a 10-2 run to take a 10-4 advantage into the final 1:44 of the first; sophomore forward
Katie Mayock opened the scoring with a three from the wing (6:59), junior guard
Lula Roig drove in with a lay-up (3:40), sophomore guard
Katie Jekot hit a three from deep (2:14), and Mayock closed the run with a jumper (1:44). The Billikens scored four straight to inch to within two, but graduate student guard
Rachel Gartner drove, got the SLU defense off-balance, and found freshman forward
Gabby Smalls under the basket to extend SJU's lead back to four points, 12-8, to close the quarter.
Q2 – Saint Louis opened the second quarter with back-to-back lay-ups en route to a 9-5 run, evening the score at 17-17 by the media timeout. The Billikens then used another 9-5 run to close the quarter, with all five of SJU's points during that run scored by Gartner, to take a four-point edge, 26-22, into the halftime break. In all, SLU outscored SJU 18-10 in the second.
Q3 – The Billikens tore off on a 13-2 run to open the third quarter en route to a 15-point advantage, 39-24, at the 5:02 mark. Roig (3) and Mayock (5) then combined for an 8-0 SJU run as the Hawks closed to within seven points, 39-32, with 2:46 to play, but Saint Louis outscored Saint Joseph's 8-3 in the final 2:31 to take an 11-point advantage, 46-35, into the final quarter.
Q4 – Sophomore forward
Elizabeth Marsicano (7:09, 2:45) hit two big three-pointers and senior guard
Nailah Delinois had a strong three-point play (1:38) in the fourth, but the Hawks were unable to get to within 10 as Saint Louis held on for the 15-point win.
