Baseball Falls in the Ninth to Army West Point, 5-4

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell in a heartbreaker on Tuesday as Army West Point scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to send the Hawks to a 5-4 defeat at North Charlotte Regional Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Army (5-9) took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring on consecutive singles by Tim Simoes and Kevin Dubrule.

• Saint Joseph's (5-9) answered in the top of the fourth, going ahead for the first time.  Liam Bendo and Tim Johnson started the inning with consecutive singles; two batters later, Jake Artz halved the deficit with a single of his own.  Brenan Hueth followed with a two-run double that gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead.

• The Black Knights tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a single by Jacob Hurtubise, but the Hawks went back ahead in the top of the sixth on a two-out double by Nate Thomas.

• Army would draw level again in the eighth on a double by Hunter Meade to set up the ninth inning.  The Black Knights would load the bases with nobody out before Anfernee Crompton lofted a fly ball to right.  Artz made the catch and then converted a clutch double play with a perfect throw to James McConnon at the plate.

• Unfortunately for the Hawks, Drake Titus would strike out, but reach first safely on a passed ball that allowed Carter Macias to score the winning run.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Harry Flannery earned the win for Army, while Jose Martinez took his first loss of the season for the Hawks.

• Johnson had a game-high three hits on the day, while Hueth and Thomas racked up a pair apiece.
