PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Saint Joseph's softball team opened up play at the Lopes Up Classic with a pair of close contests on Friday. The Hawks rallied in the opening game against UNLV, but fell to the Runnin' Rebels, 5-3, and followed with a 5-1 loss to Montana in the nightcap.
Game One
• Maddie Schmidt put UNLV up 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a RBI triple.
• The Runnin' Rebels followed with a four-run second inning to open a 5-0 advantage.
• Saint Joseph's rallied in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three times to make it 5-3.
• A single by
Carly Rybinski scored
Erica Lawrence and
Ashley Hession to make it 5-2, while
Jordan Hinkle came around to score later in the inning on a RBI ground out by
Molly Kapala.
• The Hawks would threaten in the top of the seventh as they got the go-ahead run to the plate, but UNLV was able two get out of trouble with a strike out and ground out to end the contest.

Ashley Stokes fell to 1-2 with the loss as she allowed two earned runs on four hits, while striking out three over 6.0 innings.
• Hinkle and Rybinski both finished 2-for-3 versus the Runnin' Rebels.
Game Two
• Montana took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a three-run home run by Cami Sellers.
• Maygen McGrath and Morgan Johnson each collected RBI singles in the top of the fourth to push the Grizzlies' lead to 5-0.
• Saint Joseph's rookieÂ
Alyssa Notarianni connected on her first collegiate home run with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-1.
• The Hawks would threaten in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not plate another run.
• Freshman
Saige Stutz moved to 2-1 on the season with the loss as she allowed four earned runs on eight hits over 4.0 innings.
