Softball Battles, But Drops Pair on Second Day of Lopes Up Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Saint Joseph's softball team continued play at the Lopes Up Classic on Saturday putting up a pair of strong efforts, but ultimately falling to UNLV, 5-1, and Grand Canyon, 4-3.

Game One
• UNLV plated a run in the first and four more in the second to open a 5-0 edge early on Saint Joseph's.
• The Hawks would get a run across in the bottom of the sixth as Kirstin Cox scored from third, while Sarah Ostaszewski was caught stealing at second during a double steal.
• The Runnin' Rebels worked around a one-out double in the seventh to close out the game.
•  Saige Stutz moved to 2-2 as she was charged with two earned runs over 2.0 innings.
• Amanda Herr tossed five scoreless innings of releif.

Game Two
• Saint Joseph's took an early in the top of the second as Jancarla Herrera scored on an error off a ball hit by Madison Fife.
• Grand Canyon struck for four runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run home run by Kristin Fifield, to make it 4-1.
• Saint Joseph's rallied in the seventh as Ashley Hession reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that allowed Jordan Hinkle to score, and Erica Lawrence to advance to third with no outs.
• Down 4-2 with runners at second and third and no outs, Carly Rybinski grounded out to the pitcher, but allowed Lawrence to score from third to make it 4-3.
• With Hession at third representing the tying run, Kirstin Cox sliced a ball that the left fielder made a diving catch on before bobbling the ball.
• Hession broke for home, retreated back up the line, but once the ball squirted free, broke for home to score what appeared to be the tying run.
• Unfortunately, the umpires ruled that the Grand Canyon left fielder made the catch, and followed up tossing to third base for the final out on a double play.
• Ashley Stokes moved to 1-3 on the year as she was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs over 4.0 innings.
• Herr tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
