Baseball Falls Late at Florida Gulf Coast, 7-5

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A six-run seventh inning for the home team sent the Saint Joseph's baseball squad to a 7-5 defeat to Florida Gulf Coast at Swanson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-7) got off to a good start, plating single runs in each of the first two innings.  Jake Artz led off the game and Brendan Hueth reached on an error to put runners on the corners for Nate Thomas, whose opposite-field double scored Artz with the game's first run.

• Andrew Cossetti reached on a dropped fly ball to begin the second and would later come around to score on an infield single by Artz.

• Florida Gulf Coast (7-7) would get one back in the bottom of the third, but the Hawks extended the lead in the fifth.  Artz once again led off with a single before Hueth drew a walk; Thomas would double once again, this time scoring both runners to push the lead to 4-1.

• Matt Cuppari made it a 5-1 game in the top of the sixth as he hit the first pitch of the inning over the wall in left for his first home run of the season.

• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Eagles would plate six runs in the seventh, all with two outs, to take a 7-5 lead.

• The Hawks would bring the tying run to the plate with a runner on second and nobody out in the ninth, but Gus Carter came on to retire the next three hitters and seal the win for the hosts.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Carter earned his first save of the season, preserving the win for Joey Mugavero, who improved to 1-2 on the year.  Luke Zimmerman fell to 0-1 after coming on in relief of Ryan Devine.

• Neither starter figured into the decision.  Devine allowed an unearned run on five hits while striking out five and walking four in five innings.  Nikolas Bitner went four innings for FGCU, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while fanning five.

• Thomas ended the day 3-for-5, adding a triple for seven total bases on the day.  Artz was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored as well.
