Due to the cancellation of the spring sports season, members of the Class of 2020 missed out on their own special Senior Day experience. In light of that, are spotlighting them here on SJUHawks.com.
Senior Spotlight: Jansen Kachel, Men's Rowing
A four-year letterwinner, Kachel joined the Hawks as a freshman walk-on and has been an important part of the Hawks' success since. A native of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, Kachel was named to the 2019
Philadelphia Inquirer Men's Rowing Academic All-Area Team after earning a silver medal at the 2019 Dad Vail Regatta and bronze at the Kerr Cup. A member of the SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll, the accounting major rowed for the Third Varsity 8 as a sophomore, helping the team to a bronze-medal finish at the 2018 Dad Vail Regatta.
What is your favorite Saint Joseph's rowing memory?
Going to the IRA Championship Regatta and getting caught out in the water during the middle of a storm, and racing back to the dock in 40 mile-per-hour winds while trying to scoop the water out of the hull of the boat with an empty water bottle.
How would you like to be remembered as a member of the Saint Joseph's rowing team?
I would like to be remembered as a walk-on that was able to survive the sport for four years, and only suffered a few career threatening injuries.
What has being a member of the Saint Joseph's rowing program taught you?
Being a member of the Saint Joseph's rowing program has taught me how to be a better teammate, leader, and overall person. The mental and physical trials and tribulations the sport makes you endure help transform you into a disciplined individual.
What will you take out of your involvement with the Saint Joseph's rowing program moving forward?
My memories and time as a member of the rowing program will stick with me forever. If there is one thing that I will take away it would be that in life you experience adversities that you may think will set you back. However, it's all about how you respond to that adversity and turn it into something that makes you a stronger person. No matter how difficult a task may seem, you would be surprised how far you can truly push your own body's boundaries. (cliché, I know, but it is very true).
Who that you have played with at SJU fits the following categories?
• Best dancer: Tommy McGuane. Kid knows how bust a move.
• Best dressed: Jansen Kachel. Hands down.
• Favorite Song: "Firework" by Katy Perry
• Your go-to celebration: We are usually stuck in a boat when we get to celebrate so I would probably say a firm fist pump.
