Henderson Posts Double-Double in Women’s Basketball’s Loss at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Junior Kaliah Henderson led all players in points and rebounds Wednesday night for her first double-double of the season as the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (1-2) fell at Monmouth (2-1), 57-45.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Monmouth tallied the first bucket of the contest and held a 10-2 lead at the 4:43 mark when St. Joe's called a timeout. MU tallied an 8-0 run over a 1:32 span leading into that break. St. Joe's took six of the next 11 for a 15-8 lead for Monmouth to finish the stanza. Henderson tallied four of the Hawks' points in the opening frame.
  • SJU scored the first eight points of the second period before Monmouth called a timeout on the front side of an and one opportunity by rookie Julia Nyström at 5:52. The run pushed SJU up, 16-15. The home team took a 5-3 advantage into the half to regain control, 23-19.
  • Monmouth was fast out of the gate with a 9-2 spurt over the first 1:55 of the second half. The run resulted in a timeout by St. Joe's. SJU had a 12-9 advantage through the remainder of the period for a 41-33 Monmouth lead after three.
  • St. Joe's held a 6-2 advantage through the first 5:31 on the final period to pull the game within four at 43-39. SJU drop the deficit to two points on two different occasions but couldn't overcome that margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Saint Joseph's shot 33.9% overall (20-of-59) and 0.0% (0-of-9) from long range.
  • SJU corralled 44 rebounds, compared to Monmouth's 32.
  • The Hawks dominated the paint with a 36-20 differential.
  • Henderson scored 16 points and registered 10 rebounds. She was 8-of-21 from the floor.
  • Senior Katie Mayock pulled down nine rebounds and graduate student Alayna Gribble notched a career mark with eight boards.
  • Nyström set a career best with seven points on a 3-of-6 outing. She also dished out four assists.
