Career High by Mullins Couldn’t Push Women’s Basketball Over Stetson

KATY, Texas – Despite a career high in points by sophomore Olivia Mullins, Saint Joseph's women's basketball (1-5) fell to Stetson (4-2), 51-48, on Saturday in the second day of the Van Chancellor Classic.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks tallied the first five points of the game before Stetson found the scoreboard. The Hatters battled back for a 6-5 lead, but at the media stoppage with 4:52 remaining, St. Joe's led, 7-6. Stetson held the advantage to close the period on top, 12-11. Graduate student Alayna Gribble posted seven points in the opening frame.
  • SJU scored five of the first nine points of the second period with the game tied at 16 apiece with 4:59 left. Stetson tallied five-straight points after the break to force a timeout by SJU. The Hatters ended the half with the final seven points for a 28-16 lead.
  • After Stetson recorded the first two points of the second half, the Hawks ripped off six unanswered over a 59 second span. The squads traded the next four points into the break with Stetson up, 32-24. St. Joe's concluded the period with a 9-4 scoring advantage to cut the deficit to 36-31.
  • The Hawks went on a 5-2 run over the first 2:37 of the final stanza to pull within two at 38-36. The Hatters took their own run, 6-2, over the following 1:40 to pull back ahead 44-38. Four unanswered spanning the next 1:41 took SJU down 44-42. Stetson went up by five at 49-44 with 16 seconds remaining and then 51-45 with eight ticks left. The Hawks were able to get a three off and have the chance for a five-second call to give them one last chance, but couldn't make the stop.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Hawks shot 38.1% (16-of-42) from the floor, 25.0% (5-of-20) from deep, and78.6% (11-of-14) from the line.
  • Stetson went 37.0% (17-of-46) overall, 30.8% (4-of-13) from long range, and 92.9% (13-of-14) from the stripe.
  • The Hatters tallied 22 points in the paint compared to 10 by the Hawks.
  • Mullins recorded 11 points on a 5-of-9 afternoon.
  • Gribble and rookie Mackenzie Smith were next on the squad with nine points each.
  • Five different Hawks recorded a team high three rebounds.
