PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's women's basketball (4-7) couldn't get past Vanderbilt (8-5) Tuesday afternoon inside Hagan Arena as the Commodores topped the Hawks, 64-45.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a defensive first 5:02 of the game, the Hawks held a 2-0 lead at the media break. Vandy pulled ahead with a 12-5 margin through the rest of the period, including a 9-2 run over the final 1:47.
- The visitors jumped out to a 7-2 spurt over the initial 2:26 of the second stanza. SJU finished with the upper hand on a 10-9 scoring advantage through the remainder of the half for a 28-19 Commodores' lead.
- Vandy claimed 12 of the first 20 points of the third period with 4:11 left in the frame. The Hawks chipped away at the deficit with an 8-4 advantage through the rest of the third.
- The Commodores took a 10-1 run over the initial 3:35 of the final period to push their margin up to 54-36 when the Hawks called timeout for the second time in the period. It was much closer the rest of the game with Vanderbilt holding a 10-9 margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- The Hawks shot 36.4% (16-of-44) from the field, 18.8% (3-of-16) from deep, and 71.4% (10-of-14) from the line.
- Vanderbilt hit 48.1% (26-of-54) overall, 30.0% (6-of-20) from three-point range, and 66.7% (6-of-9) from the stripe.
- Vandy held a 32-18 points advantage in the paint and 17-0 on second chance points.
- Junior Kaliah Henderson led all scorers with 21 points on a 9-of-17 showing. She also grabbed a team best five rebounds.
- Graduate student Katie Jekot added 12 points.
