Four Double-Digit Scorers Lead Women’s Basketball to Big Victory at Penn, 83-70

 
PHILADELPHIA – Four Hawks finished in double-figures Tuesday night as the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (3-6) picked up an 83-70 victory inside The Palestra against Big 5 rival Penn (4-6).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • St. Joe's jumped out to an 11-3 lead before Penn scored five-straight heading into the media break at 3:38 for an 11-8 Hawks' lead. The home team held the advantage through the rest of the first period with an 11-8 margin. Graduate student Katie Jekot accounted for 13 of the Hawks' points with three triples.
  • To start the second period, the teams traded seven points apiece before the Hawks tallied a 6-0 run over a 1:09 span to force a Penn timeout with 4:29 left. St. Joe's held a 32-26 lead. The Hawks finished the stanza with a 12-6 margin for the most points scored in a half this season with their 44-32 lead.
  • The scoring efforts slowed down over the initial 5:36 of the third period with Penn holding the upper hand, 9-6, to cut the deficit to 50-41. The Quakers rallied to close the gap to one after three, 54-53.
  • SJU tallied a 7-2 run over the first 2:04 of the final period to force a Penn timeout with a 61-55 Hawks' lead. The offense continued to pour in for the Hawks with a 22-15 advantage through the rest of the game. St. Joe's 29 points in the final stanza is its most in a quarter this year.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Hawks shot a season best 47.5% (28-of-59) overall, season high 43.8% (7-of-16) from deep, and 71.4% (20-of-28) from the stripe.
  • Penn went 39.7% (23-of-58) from the floor, 41.7% (10-of-24) from long range, and 77.8% (14-of-18) from the line.
  • SJU posted a season low seven turnovers compared to Penn's 12. 
  • St. Joe's dominated the paint with 40 points inside, on top of the Quaker's 26. 
  • Rookie Laila Fair posted career highs in points (20) and rebounds (11) for her first career double-double. She was 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-9 at the line.
  • Jekot finished with 20 points on a 7-of-15 night, including a career high five triples made on 10 attempts. She added five rebounds, four assists, and two steals to her line.
  • Freshman Talya Brugler topped her career mark with 18 points. Brugler went 6-of-8 from the floor, including 1-of-1 from three-point range. She added a 5-of-7 effort from the line.
  • Junior Kaliah Henderson rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts with 16 points on a 5-of-9 game with a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.
  • The victory snaps a three-game losing streak against the Quakers.
  • Fair and Jekot posted the first multi-20+ point scoring outing for the Crimson & Gray since Jekot and Kristalyn Baisden did so at Dayton on Jan. 27, 2019.
UP NEXT:
St. Joe's will take on Temple on Saturday for its second straight and third overall Big 5 game on the season.
